Samsung Research America’s Audio Lab is dedicated to developing new audio technologies and improving sound quality while leading changes in audio market paradigms. Devantier started working for Samsung in October 2013. By January 2014, Samsung had acquired lab space and hired four staff. fully functional. From there, the lab was ready to start working on its mandate to “bring Samsung audio technology to the top of the industry”.

Devantier states that “the first product we worked on was the Radiant 360 speaker; it was in fact the first consumer speaker to offer 360-degree sound. We were the industry leader, and now 360 degree speakers have become very popular in the market.

Evolutionary change

Another example of this cutting edge innovation is Samsung’s OTS (Object Tracking Sound) technology. To improve the Soundbar technology that allows sound to be delivered in fixed directions, the lab has developed televisions that incorporate speakers not only at the bottom and sides of the screen, but also in the upper left and right sections. . This enables OTS technology to use deep learning which can recognize the type of content displayed on the screen and provide multi-channel audio accordingly. Additionally, in 2020, Samsung’s Q-Symphony and OTS technologies come together to truly maximize the potential of both solutions. While OTS delivers multi-channel surround sound through the TV speakers, Q-Symphony makes the TV-speaker-soundbar combination possible, allowing the TV speakers to deliver rich and vivid surround sound while that the soundbar delivers powerful and absorbing bass.

Audio in the future

The creation of AI is poised to reshape the audio industry, and Samsung is working to anticipate the changes it will bring. When asked to describe what he sees as the role of AI in the audio industry, Devantier said, “I think we can use AI to help our speakers play louder. , with more perceived bass and less perceived distortion. AI will also help improve the sound of old recordings and allow our speakers to adapt to different listening environments.

AI is also strengthening future solutions by enabling features such as the active voice amplifier (AVA). Samsung’s AVA function enables the TV to recognize the environment of the audiovisual space and to deliver optimized sound not only for the content displayed on the screen, but also for the viewing space in which the consumer is located. In 2020, sensors integrated into QLED solutions will allow optimized visualization, even in very noisy rooms. For example, if a user is watching something and a family member turns on a blender in the adjoining kitchen, the system will adjust to ensure that the dialogue remains audible to the viewer in real time despite the unexpected peripheral noise.

In terms of how his lab will help deliver better sound in the future, Devantier reports that he will continue to meet the needs of customers who seek “portable, high-quality sound” while improving and expanding their business. OTS technology. “Maybe one day we will develop a speaker that sounds great, plays very loud and is almost invisible or exceptionally small and portable,” Devantier concludes, “Until then we will continue to produce solutions. which gradually improve the sound quality.
