See Sylvan Esso Holler ‘Hey Mami’ from Moog Sound Lab

North Carolina duo Sylvan Esso combine the distinct talents of Mountain Man singer Amelia Meath and Megafaun bass producer Nick Sanborn. The warm but deeply electronic touch of the latter creates an improbable but seductive backdrop for the supple vocals of the former, as evidenced by their now double-sided single “Hey Mami” / “Play It Right”. Long story short, one could imagine a more folkloric but more flourishing Purity Ring – or one could just tap the clip above to watch the pair do their job. Upon entering the Moog Sound Lab (see previous visits by Megafaun, Little Dragon, Twin Shadow, the Antlers and Ra Ra Riot), Sylan Esso is in his element: a space where there is no limit to the number of ways in which Meath’s voice can be bent. On this live recreation of “Hey Mami”, Sanborn loops and overlays it first, then delivers the rhythm around 1:30. They are currently on the road and join Justin Vernon’s Volcano Choir for a handful of dates.
