What is Sleep Week?

Sleep Awareness Week was launched by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in 1998 to further emphasize the importance of regular, good quality sleep. Since its launch, Sleep Week (as it’s affectionately known) has been a way to open the conversation about sleep: how to do it better, longer, and why it’s important to get seven to nine hours a day. night.

Each year the NSF chooses a new theme for Sleep Awareness Week, and this year it’s all about being your best sleeper. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure you have a relaxing routine in place each night, including going to bed at the same time and fully relaxing before closing your eyes.

Here are some other sleep tips you can use to be your best sleeper:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep and wake schedule
  • Limit your use of technology (or use night mode) in the hour before sleep
  • Avoid consuming caffeine after noon as it can affect how quickly you fall asleep
  • Do not exercise too vigorously close to bedtime as this may wake you up
  • Practice a deep breathing technique for sleeping, such as the military sleep method
  • Use a good sleep app to relax your mind and body while sleeping
  • Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark and quiet – use earplugs to block noise
